The Potka Block has been functioning since 01-04-1958 vide the letter no 3852 dated 23.03.1958 of the Department of Community Development. The block headquarter is situated besides the Hata - Musabani road at a distance of 7 Km from Hata (a place on Jamshedpur-Chaibasa Road). The area of the block is 59025 Hectors. The block constitutes of 25 Panchayats, 12 Halkas and 293 villages of which 12 villages are Bechiraji (no man's land).
Initially, Potka Block office started at Kalikapur Dak Bungalow. In public interest and due to political compulsions a new building was constructed at Potka village and in the same year the office was shifted from kalikapur to new building.
Geographical and Physical features
To the North of Potka Block, Jamshedpur Block is positioned. In the South of this block District Mayurbhanj of Orissa is positioned. In the East , Musabani, Ghatshila, and Dumaria blocks are positioned and in the West Rajnagar Block of West Singhbhum is positioned.

Attraction
18 kilometers from Potka, one finds the Sabar tribe, which is settled at Shabar Nagar. For the uplift of this tribe, the State Welfare Department has established a high school and hostel facilities.
Another place of tourist interest is the Harina Shiva Temple, 29 kilometers from the Potka Block headquarters. Legend holds that on the last day of the month of Jyastha, several ‘Shivlings’ prop up from the ground and then disappear after the religious ceremony is over. A three-day fair marks the occasion.
Rankini Temple or Kapagadhi Ghat, situated in the Bansila Gram Panchayat of Potka Block is famous for the human sacrifices that were offered to the Goddess in the past.
